On Tuesday February 28th, Transformative Changes partnered with Words, Beats, and Life, and the Washington Performing Arts to witness COTTON, a multimedia performance using multiple artistic genres: the photography of John Dowell, the opera vocals of Denyce Graves and the moving words of Nikki Giovannni, Alora Young & others. Following, the youth touched the soil of a plantation and created a modern rendition of the same performance based off of their reflections.
The role of arts and culture in empowering low-income communities and communities of color is undeniable. For centuries, these creative expressions have not only preserved collective memory but also promoted healing and unlocked individual potential. Investing in the creative economy is crucial for fostering social change and innovation. Centering the power of art and activism creates healthier, happier, and more inclusive communities. Such investments also drive growth in sectors like tourism and education, emphasizing the interconnectedness of arts, culture, and equitable development.
The current care systems exhibit significant inadequacies that disproportionately affect children, seniors, and individuals with disabilities. At Transformative Changes, we are committed to addressing these disparities by advocating for a care system that is equitable and effective. Our vision includes affordable child care for every child, dignity for seniors and disabled individuals, and essential support for caregivers. Collaboration among all stakeholders is vital in driving these transformative solutions.
A healing-centered approach is essential for fostering holistic community well-being. By integrating culture, spirituality, and civic action, we can address trauma collectively. Healing-centered liberation not only critiques existing structures but also advocates for innovative decision-making that prioritizes the voices of those affected by historical and ongoing injustices. It emphasizes community expertise and the importance of cultural traditions in the healing process.
Achieving healthy communities is vital for ensuring that everyone receives the same level of care, regardless of race or ethnicity. Structural racism and poverty significantly contribute to health disparities, particularly among young people. It's crucial to recognize that health extends beyond the healthcare system; Social Determinants of Health play a pivotal role in shaping our well-being. These nonmedical factors influence the environments where we are born, live, learn, work, play, worship, and age. Many of these factors are beyond individual control, highlighting the need for community advocacy and protection.
True safety doesn’t begin with policing or surveillance—it begins with belonging, equity, and healing. The Safer Communities and Schools initiative centers the lived experiences of youth, families, educators, and local leaders to examine and transform the root causes of trauma and violence. By shifting away from punishment-based systems and investing in community-driven solutions like restorative justice, prevention, and culturally-rooted violence interventions, we work to build environments where care, connection, and collective power replace fear and exclusion.
