Transformative Changes is rooted in a healing justice framework that understands trauma as systemic—not just individual—and believes care, safety, and dignity must be built into our policies, programs, and institutions.
Our work centers Black and Brown communities, especially youth and femmes, and uplifts practices that reduce harm, build leadership, and shift power—without compromising anyone’s faith, identity, or beliefs.
Each of these policy buckets reflects that commitment and grounds our work in community care, equity, and structural healing.
We are always looking for passionate and dedicated volunteers to help us carry out our mission. Whether you have a few hours to spare or want to make a long-term commitment, there are many ways to get involved and make a difference. We call for policies and practices that honor caregiving as essential labor, value the wisdom of elders, and affirm the rights and wellbeing of children, youth, and caregivers alike. This bucket focuses on the collective right to healing—through mental health access, spiritual care, and dignified intergenerational caregiving systems. We affirm that trauma is political, and care and healing must be community-held.
Healing justice principle: Healing is structural. It must be embedded in how we care for ourselves, each other, the people doing frontline work, and future generations.
We build liberatory schools and youth-centered systems that affirm identity, provide safety, and foster leadership—not control. Young people deserve not only access to education—but learning environments that affirm their dignity, reflect their identities, and nurture their full potential. Youth and education justice calls for the transformation of systems that have historically harmed Black, Brown, disabled, and queer youth..
Healing justice principle: Intergenerational healing requires ending cycles of harm. When we envision youth as catalysts for change, education becomes a site of healing, not punishment
We believe that housing, health, and the environment are interconnected rights—not commodities. Housing and ecological justice center the truth that our ability to heal is shaped by where we live, breathe, and belong. We organize for reparative development that returns land, protects tenants, and roots healing in place. Housing and ecological grief, climate trauma, and environmental harm are addressed through culture and community care.
Healing justice principle: Displacement is trauma. Land, safety, and shelter are essential to collective healing and long-term liberation.
We believe that art is not just a form of expression—it’s a form of power. Art, storytelling, and ancestral memory are tools for truth-telling, resistance, and repair. Through cultural organizing, we harness creative tools like poetry, music, performance, and storytelling to build collective voice, reclaim ancestral memory, and drive systemic change
Healing justice principle: Culture is not a sidebar to strategy—it is the strategy. Our healing is linked to communal memory, expression, and land.
We envision a world where safety is collective, not punitive. Abolition and community justice focus on ending systems of harm—like mass incarceration, over-policing, and surveillance—and replacing them with life-affirming responses rooted in care, accountability, and restoration.
Healing justice principle: Abolition is healing. We can’t heal inside systems that harm us. We build new systems rooted in relationship and care.
On Tuesday February 28th, Transformative Changes partnered with Words, Beats, and Life, and the Washington Performing Arts to witness COTTON, a multimedia performance using multiple artistic genres: the photography of John Dowell, the opera vocals of Denyce Graves and the moving words of Nikki Giovannni, Alora Young & others. Following, the youth touched the soil of a plantation and created a modern rendition of the same performance based off of their reflections.
